Luigi Taddei

 
Self-taught artist, Luigi Taddei, was born in Brè sopra Lugano on 27 August 1898 and dies on 24 January 1992 at the age of 94 in Albonago. A family of emigrants: his father, Cristofor a bricklayer in Algeria, his brother Giuseppe “Pepp” an entrepreneur in Montevideo, Riccardo a bricklayer in California, Achille “Chìl” an entrepreneur in France and Romeo in Algeria.

In 1920 he obtains a Federal scholarship. During the younger years, he makes many trips to study in Italy; however he makes longer trips to Algeria, Morocco, Guatemala and Mexico.

For many years he is present at all the National art exhibitions, which make him known beyond the border of the canton where he already moves with affirmed fame.

In 1930, on the occasion of the Algeria’s centenary, he exhibits his work with the company of Argentine and Orientalists artists in Algiers, Tunis, Orano and Casablanca. His participation in Federal competitions earn him more than mere recognition. In 1978, the Municipality of Viganello, a current quarter of Lugano, celebrates his eightieth birthday with a anthological exhibition staged at the inauguration of the new school. On that occasion, the artist donates 85 works to the City.

1985 is the year in which the City of Viganello makes him a Honorary Citizen, showing further appreciation for his artistic activity.

In 1988, the Museum of Villa Malpensata dedicate san interesting anthological exhibition to him, a tribute to a life devoted to art. His works are found in various museums, belong to the Swiss Confederation or Swiss and foreign collections. One of his larger works can be seen at the Hotel Colibrì in Aldesago.

In 1988, the Art Museum in Lugano, today known as LAC or Contemporary Arts of Lugano, the Cultural Centre of Lugano has an entire anthological exhibition dedicated to him, a tribute to a life devoted to art.
